February 1945. During the retreat of the German army from the Rhine, "Major Paul Kruger" (Vann) is ordered to destroy the Ludendorff bridge over the Remagen, the only bridge over the river. "Krüger" delays this task so that he can save the German 15th Division, which is trapped on the other side of the Rhine. "Lieutenant Phil Hartman" (Segal), the commander of the American forces, wants to prevent the retreat of the Germans.
