Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) is a successful professor at a prominent university. He has been living under the shadow of a big lie for years. Silk appears to be white, but in fact, he is a half-breed black who has hidden his original identity to succeed in work and society. But an incident destroys all his reputation and history, and completely changes the course of his life. His insults to several students in front of the classroom question his entire credibility. The administrators of the university consider Silk's words as a result of his racist mindset, and finally decide to expel him from the university. After being fired, Silk meets a young woman named Fonia Fairley (Nicole Kidman).
