Maya, a 6-year-old girl, leaves Yugoslavia with her parents for Denmark in hopes of building a better life, leaving her two older brothers alone with the promise that they will join them after the family settles down. But the new country is difficult and unfamiliar, and the family struggles to adapt to the new language, culture and lifestyle.
