Sheldon Barrett, a drifter and small-time con artist, encounters his old friend, "Brother Bud Sanders," in the suburbs of a small town. A professional con artist, Bud makes ends meet by setting up a preaching tent, performing faith healing and selling stolen cars. While helping her, Sheldon falls in love with Arlene; A supermarket cashier who is deeply religious, lonely and believes in UFOs. When Arlene dreams of an approaching UFO, each character faces this impending fate in their own way.
