Calcutta Hazari Pal (Puri), who has just lost his farm due to drought and pressure from squatters, comes to Calcutta with his family to find work. Max (Swayze), an American doctor who came to India on an unsuccessful spiritual quest after the death of his young patient in America, is guided by Hazari to a clinic for the poor run by John Battle (Collins).
