Frances is a seventeen-year-old teenage girl who goes to northern New York with her family in the summer of 1963. Her father is a doctor and expects Frances to go to university and marry a doctor. Frances meets a dance instructor named Johnny. A dancer who dances with John becomes pregnant and stops working. Unbeknownst to his family, Francis announces his readiness to dance in order to help them. Johnny accepts. From that day on, Johnny becomes Frances's dance instructor and works with her full time.
