Elmer (Buster Keaton) works in a watch repair shop and is in love with one of the customers of the watch workshop named Paula (Dorothy Sebastian). Paula invites Elmer to a circus, where Paula falls in love with a tightrope walker (George Lewis). Elmer is trying to become a tightrope walker and win Paula's heart. Finally, Elmer saves Paula by jumping rope in a burning building.
