The film is a recreation of the real-life stockbroker William Griffin Wilson, a World War I veteran who lost his entire fortune after the stock market crash of 1929 and became an alcoholic. Her life changed when she met Dr. Robert Holbrook, who was also an alcoholic, and the two formed a group that later became Alcoholics Anonymous, which works to stop alcohol consumption.
