England, late 18th century. A rich man named Mr. Dashwood (Tom Wilkinson), who is on the verge of death, gives all his property to his eldest son, John (James Fleet), from his first wife, but in return asks him to take care of his daughters, Eleanor (Emma Thompson), Marian (Kate Winslet) and teenage Margaret (Emile Francois), who are from his second wife, and pay their expenses in full. After the death of the father, John, who is dominated by his wife "Fanny" (Harriet Walter), reneges on the promise he made to his father, and the Dashwood girls, along with their mother, are forced to leave the aristocratic Park Saks mansion, which is now owned by John, and think of somewhere, of course, more humble to continue their lives.
