Robert and Catherine are married and living happily together. Robert is the US ambassador to England and his wife is in the last days of her pregnancy. Their baby is stillborn, but a priest at the hospital offers Robert to adopt another baby whose mother died at birth. Robert accepts this offer without telling his wife and they return to London.
