The basketball coach of Richmond High School retires and is replaced by Carter, a black man who used to be a high school student with a brilliant record. He was a very strict and law-abiding coach, and his behavior causes opposition from the players. He makes a contract with each player that they are obliged to show up on time for training and to be active in their classrooms, and that their grade point average is acceptable to the university.
