
Larry Cook (Jason Robards) decides to divide his four hundred acre farm among his three daughters; But when he finds out that his youngest daughter, Caroline (Jason Lee), who is a litigation lawyer, has doubts about his intentions, he deprives him of his share. The other sisters, Ginny (Long) and Rose (Pfeiffer), despite having been abused by their father as children, welcome his decision. After their drunken and disturbed father moves into the house of their farmer neighbor, Harold Clark (Hingle), they form a relationship with his hippie son, Jess (Ferret). When Rose's husband finds out about his wife's infidelity, he gets drunk and hits an obstacle while riding a tractor and dies. Ty (Carradine), Jenny's husband, with Caroline's support, sues Jenny and Rose on behalf of their father, who feels he has been mistreated.
